“The availability of the PSfA portfolio was an amazing opportunity to demonstrate to my students how different disciplines can approach artwork. We collaborated with our friends in the Political Science department and the newly developed Center for Civic Engagement at Black Hills State University to challenge all students to research, decipher, and reflect on the works included in the portfolio. They rose to the occasion beautifully and drafted insightful writings that truly blew my mind. The opportunity also allowed for more robust conversations with my faculty colleagues about ways that we might continue to collaborate in the future!

What can you expect from a PSfA portfolio?

Each portfolio will be shipped to your institution and can be used for in-class study for up to two weeks. The portfolio will include a selection of photographic prints and various educational guides, including reading lists, writing prompts, and suggested classroom discussion questions. Our goal is to support student engagement through in-person interaction with prints over an extended period of time. Students will study the photographer’s methods, material use, and conceptual reasoning, and develop a better understanding and greater appreciation of the photographic medium.

Once the in-class print viewing and exercises are complete, students will learn the nuances of creating condition reports and how to pack fine art prints, allowing the portfolio to ship safely to the next school.
